Its been a year and my alopecia areata still isn’t gone?

May 20th, 2012

Question by Knarkill: Its been a year and my alopecia areata still isn’t gone?
A year ago I got two patches on the back sides of my head, and they barely filled in. For a while I was using topical steroids, but I just gave up. I was wondering if I should try to get steroid injections. Ever since I got alopecia I have been very depressed and have been in a shell. I am very self conscious about the alopecia and I am constantly trying to avoid being scene. It has been like this for a whole year. I am about to start college this upcoming fall, and I wanted this problem to be gone. Is there anything I can do, or should I just give up? And should I see a therapist to get me over the anxiety I have over the alopecia?

Hey darling listen to me now. I had alopecia areata about two years ago and when I found my two patches, I nearly lost it. I was a wreck. My doctor injected quarterzone shots into my head where the hair wasn’t growing. I had to have two different sessions done but seriously my hair has grown back and I’m perfectly fine now! =) topical solutions don’t work as well as the shots fyi. Good luck and go get some quarterzone shots!

androgenic alopecia & hair transplant *15 yrs old*?

May 20th, 2012

Question by lalalala: androgenic alopecia & hair transplant *15 yrs old*?
i have a very important question to ask. first off, i am a female (15) and since i was 12 years old, my hair has been thinning tremendously. it was in april that a dermatologist did a scalp biopsy on me, and told me that i have androgenetic alopecia. right now i am taking spironolactone (50mg), applying rogaine 2x daily, using amla powder, and i am on birth control pills. Instead of seeing improvement, I have noticed that my scalp shows more, and i am thinning in places where i used to have hair, in the beginning of this condition. I really want to get a hair transplant, and I haven’t found out any answers as to if you can get a hair transplant if you are under 18. I know that there’s only three more years, but this condition has taken a huge toll on me, and it has changed my life completely. I was also curious if any of you guys who have had a hair transplant are pleased with your results. any advice would help, thank you all.

i’m a female, 16, and have alopecia areata.
i’ve gone through the same thoughts myself about getting a hair transplant, etc. but i currently wear a wig.
i’ve tried rogaine, and it didn’t do anything for me, and i’ve also had steroid shots [20-40 at a time] injected in my head, and had no improvement.
the disease has taken its toll on me too, but i’ve joined a online support group for alopecia,

www.alopeciaworld.com

maybe you could join, and ask other people with alopecia the same question?

When in doubt, start with your family doctor for a consultation. If there is anyone else that you need to see, you’d get a referral from him/her.

can nickel cause alopecia in children?

May 19th, 2012

Asked by rita pm ? Nickel can cause alopecia in children
My son was diagnosed with alopecia. its first appearance a year ago, after influenza vaccination (which was his first flu shot ever? your doctor cortizone lamp and minoxidil for hair regrowth after one year showed a rise in a few weeks earlier. my son has been a cultural fact to decide that it was ringworm. met a lady of about three days and she told me that my son tested for nickel. told her son had the same password and I I discovered it was the nickel. nickel was removed from clothing, etc.. and never lost his hair after. he said he had a nickel sensitivity. I realize that my son was complaining about how her itching of the scalp. I checked the area and is a bit red. know it is not likely to ringworm. my son’s skin is very sensitive about everything because he was a baby. to mourn so much to his scalp and his body itched . your doctor said you have alopecia, but I can not say what the cause may seem intial. not run blood or skin biospy gave me an answer crèmeMeilleure:.
Answer

O
You probably need to get tested for allergies, food sensativities chemicals, metals and drugs …. is a regualr allergist, or a naturopathic doctor …. Read Jenny McCarthy on the site? about vaccines and flu shots … applications such as flu vaccines contains no additives, as it is alternate shot ….. It is normal for a child who has this and your doctor knnow what to do …. anyway ….

Problems with Hairloss ?

May 19th, 2012

Question by : Problems with Hairloss ?
Im 17 years old and i was wondering if it is normal for someone my age to lose 34 hair strands after straightening my hair???
i know that its dumb that i count my own hair strands but im desperate!!!
i do sometimes straighten my hair 3 times a week for school
How is it that some people who color their hair and style it seem to not have problems with hair loss or damaging??
Much thanks

Best answer:

Answer by AMY
people on average loose up to 200 strands of hair a day so it is perfectly normal if you are loosing pieces of hair like off the ends then it is damage …. make sure you are using a heat protectant when you use a Straightener

Need help in alopecia areata treatment(guidelines/suggestion in diet area)?

May 18th, 2012

Question by worth2be_lovedGURL: Need help in alopecia areata treatment(guidelines/suggestion in diet area)?
I’ve been facing a moderate level of hair loss and its believed to be alopecia areata. I consulted the doctor and they gave me tablets to consume and cream to apply. My scalp is much more recovered now, but not noticing it will still come back, as the bald spot went to the other surface on my scalp, and now I had to take a good care of my hair again. No dying, straightening, perm or styling. It seems very fragile. May I know what is the root cause of alopecia areata and what can be done to prevent it from coming back? What sort of diet should I apply in my daily meal? Appreciate your advise.

Answer by Dr Martin Wade
Alopecia areata is an auto-immune condition where the body’s own immune system is attacking the hair follicles. The reason for this is not known but it is thought that there is a slight error in the immune system which perceives the affected follicles as abnormal. This does not mean that the rest of the immune system is faulty or under-performing. The good news is the hair follicles have not been destroyed and can re-grow a normal hair at some stage in the future.

Treatments include topical formulations, injections to the scalp, topical immunotherapy in the form of DCP and sometimes systemic immunosuppressive medications. Unfortunately there is a proportion of the population who do not respond to treatment.

My advice is that you ensure you are seen by a Dermatologist to ensure you have an accurate diagnosis and the appropriate treatment. I see many patients myself who have been misdiagnosed.
