A study published in the Journal of Dermatology examined the effectiveness of onion juice or placebo in people with alopecia areata. Twenty-three people with alopecia areata applied the onion juice twice daily for two months, and 15 people applied tap water twice daily for two months.

People in the onion group began to experience regrowth of hair after two weeks of treatment. At four weeks, hair regrowth was seen in 17 (73.9%) people and at six weeks, hair regrowth was observed in 20 (86.9%) people. Improvement was significantly higher among males. In the tap water control group, hair regrowth was apparent in only 2 people at 8 weeks.

Alopecia Areata
The cause of alopecia areata is unknown, but it is thought to be an autoimmune condition (the body makes antibodies to its own hair) that may affect children or adults of any age. The affected persons are generally in excellent health. This type of hair loss usually causes totally smooth, round patches about the size of a coin or larger. Although rare, it can result in complete loss of scalp and body hair. In most cases the hair regrows; however, dermatologists treat many people with this condition in order to make hair regrow faster.

Treatment includes:

-cortisone injections in the scalp where the hair loss occurred
-topical medications
-a special kind of light treatment
-pills

“Because hair usually grows back within a year, you may decide not to treat alopecia areata.

If you choose not to treat the condition and wait for your hair to grow back, you may wish to:

Wear hairpieces or hair weaves. Hairpieces are made from human or synthetic hair that is implanted into a nylon netting. Hairpieces may be attached to the scalp with glue, metal clips, or tape. Hair weaving involves sewing or braiding pieces of longer hair into existing hair.
Use certain hair care products and styling techniques. Hair care products or perms may make hair appear thicker. Dyes may be used to color the scalp. However, continual use of perms or dyes may result in more hair loss.
The most common treatment for patchy hair loss is many injections of corticosteroids into the scalp, about 1cm apart, every 4 to 6 weeks. Limited research reports that hair grows back at the site of injection in some people.

Children and some adults may be treated with topical corticosteroids that are applied to the affected skin. Minoxidil (Rogaine) may be used along with topical corticosteroids.

Contact immunotherapy may be the most effective treatment for severe alopecia areata. A medicine is “painted” on the scalp once a week. This irritates the skin and makes it red and scaly. Hair growth may appear within 3 months of beginning treatment. Studies have shown that half or more of those with severe alopecia areata had a good response, but how much hair grew back varied widely. Side effects of contact immunotherapy include a severe rash ( contact dermatitis) and swollen lymph nodes, especially in the neck.

Psoralen with ultraviolet A light (PUVA) therapy may also be used to treat alopecia areata. PUVA usually is reserved for people who have large areas of skin affected by the disorder or who cannot use other treatments. For PUVA, a medicine, called a psoralen, is used to make the skin more sensitive to ultraviolet A (UVA) light. Then the skin is exposed to UVA light.”

There is no cure for hair loss unless it’s surgery. A sudden loss of hair can come on due to stress. This type of loss will cease once that worry is over. (In this type of loss the hair root looks much like an exclamation point (!)) If you want to do the surgery & have the money to spare & that makes you feel better about yourself, then by all means do it. If you don’t, than don’t worry about it & let people accept you for who you are. My husband is almost all bald, I never knew him when he had hair (he lost it at like 19 yrs) & I can’t even picture him with hair. No kidding really…I love that head!

I have three words for you and your daughter … TAHITIAN NONI Juice. This may seem extreme, but fatched was called everything from a life raft to a miracle. This juice has been known to do everything from diabetes to eliminate some of the thickening and hair growth. It is truly amazing and there are thousands of stories that I might come up. If you really want to help her daughter with her without her alopecia is a negative impact, please contact me @ Mizzpreppy@yahoo.com. Since I am all the daughters of your age, I could not imagine being in their situation and would like to help.

Luftek sounds like a scam to me as far as a hair loss treatment. It’s basically meditation – you can borrow meditation CDs from the library for free and see if that helps.
