Anyone Know Someone With Alopecia Who Grew Their Hair Back?

I have a gorgeous seven year old neice with alopecia. The last time I saw her in 2007 she was just missing a patch or two. Now, she’s nearly completely bald and wears hats constantly to hide her head. She has the greatest attitude but I still want to see that there are people who are able to grow their hair after this awful disease remits.

It is not impossible for her hair to grow back, but it IS impossible to tell you whether or not it will. EVERY case of alopecia is different. There are no permanent proven treatments or cures that work for everyone aside from gene therapy – which is still years away if at all ever possible. It is an auto-immune disorder, not entirely unlike diabetes. You can’t cure it, but you can trick the body by giving it insulin. You can’t cure alopecia either, but you can sometimes trick the body into growing the hair back. However, sometimes the treatments are much worse than the hair loss. When I started losing my hair again at age 9, I took oral steroids which made me gain weight and made me sick. A doctor once put a topical cream on my head to irritate the scalp and stimulate the hair follicles. I think I was about 3 years old and I can still remember screaming bloody murder all the way home and my mom rushing me into the bathtub with my clothes still on to wash it off my head. In my personal opinion, the best option for your niece would be to let her find her own way to accept this condition. I don’t like to call it a disease because you’re not sick, you just have no hair. I think of alopecia like a grieving process. You truly have suffered a loss. Hair is an important part of our identities and our lives. You first feel shock, denial, anger, and then you might bargain with God or anyone else to get your hair back. But finally, you come to accept it. I think it took me over 20 years to accept it, but I know people who have taken a lot less time. The emotional aspects are the only things you can truly try to “cure. ” Check out www. naaf. org and see if there are support groups in her city. We just had the national Alopecia Areata conference in Houston. Next year it is in Indianapolis. She will have a blast. There are hundreds of kids her age there and she will learn that she is not alone and begin the road to acceptance. I just hate to see people get their hopes up with treatments because they are NOT a given. Good luck and let me know if you ever want to talk more. Sorry I wrote so much!

Yes, I frequently can get patients with alopecia totalis to regrow their hair using topical immunotherapy. Hopefully her dermatologist is familiar with the techniques and will do it for her.
